The Dance Daze in Schools fundraising campaign to bring a FREE dance program to a Title 1 school has launched! We have 1 day remaining (until April 24th, 2013) to raise just $260 more. We have already had 24 donations pledged, and we are about half way to our goal of $500!

In a couple of weeks, Dance Daze in Schools will be launch a fundraising campaign to bring a FREE session of dance classes to a school or community center! We know that Dance Daze® classes are extremely fun, engaging, and educational experiences for students, and we want YOU to help us decide which Bay Area school or community center should get this free session of dance classes! Last Tuesday, December 4, 2012, we bid farewell to our wonderful W. T. Chan Fellow Intern, Aiyu Li, who came all the way from China to work for Dance Daze®! During her time in the states, Aiyu studied at UC Berkeley, led a Dance Daze® creative movement and tutoring program at Yu Ming Charter School in Oakland, supported our fundraising and development efforts, and interviewed wonderful nonprofit leaders in the fields of arts and education. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have met and worked with such a lovely young woman, and we will miss her greatly!

Professional Development for Dance Daze® Interns

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, some of the Dance Daze® in Schools interns attended an arts integration retreat called “Building the Builders”. The retreat was sponsored by Arts Is Education and the Alameda County Office of Education. The event was held at the lovely Peralta Elementary School, an arts demonstration school in the Oakland Unified School District.

We met and networked with wonderful teaching artists, program directors, educators, and school administrators at the retreat. We learned more about the Common Core State Standards and their anticipated effect on English language arts, mathematics, and arts education in schools. Additionally, the Dance Daze® in Schools interns and Dance Daze® founder Saumirah McWoodson presented about their work with Dance Daze, Inc. and Dance Daze® in Schools as part of a Pecha Kucha presentation. We had a great time, and we are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share some of our work and ideas with the public!

2012 Chan Fellows at Dance Daze, Inc. Offices

On Thursday, October 4, 2012, we were visited by the 2012 UC Berkeley W. T. Chan Fellows. The Chan Fellows are a group of 6 undergraduate and graduate students from China, who spend 5 months in the United States, immersed in a service-learning experience. The Fellows live with local families, attend a university seminar 1 day per week, and work as interns 4 days per week at a nonprofit organization that serves disadvantaged communities. Our Dance Daze Chan Fellow is interning for our nonprofit organization, Dance Daze in Schools. In addition to focusing on fundraising and development with Dance Daze in Schools, she is also leading a dance program and math tutoring program at Yu Ming Charter School, a Mandarin-immersion charter school in Oakland, California. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work with UC Berkeley’s W. T. Chan Fellows this year, and we are excited for the work our Fellow is doing this fall semester!

Dance Daze Halloween 2011

We had so much fun in our classes yesterday! In addition to giving away FREE pumpkins to each student who attended class, we also played lots of fun games in our Creative Movement class, including “Pass the Pumpkin” and “Magic Rope”! It was our first time trying those games, and they were a hit!

Dance Daze October 2011 Updates!

Hello Everyone!

It’s been a while since we blogged, so here are a few updates for you!

1) We will now be sending out a newsletter on the 1st of each month, to keep our Dance Daze Parents updated on our current program offerings. You can find our first official newsletter (from September 2011) here: http://hosted-p0.vresp.com/1024731/1231c2aec7/ARCHIVE

2) On Saturday, October 29th, we will be giving away one FREE pumkin full of goodies and games to EACH child that comes to dance class! Children ages 3 to 5 are invited to Creative Movement at 9:00 am, and children 6 years and older may join us for Level 1 Ballet at 10:00 am. (Regular drop in rates occur for new students.)

3) We will be having our 2011 Winter Dance Camp from Monday, December 19th – Friday, December 23rd! The camp is open for ages 5 to 12, and will run from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm each day. Students will learn hip hop, jazz, ballet, and cheer dance! The camp will be held at Bladium Sports and Fitness Club, and snacks will be provided by Dance Daze. 4) We want to offer MORE studio dance classes! In January, we are planning to start a 30-minute Pre-Pointe class for children ages 9 and older, and a Jazz/Hip Hop class for children ages 6 and older. Exciting news!
